The Ghanaian school system is divided into Primary School (ages 6-12), Junior Secondary School (ages 13-16) and Senior Secondary School (ages 17-19). Volunteers who want to work in a Primary School need no prior knowledge in teaching. The number of pupils in the classes is often very high. The volunteers initially assist the teachers with their work. After a settling-in period, own lessons can be prepared and classes are conducted independently. In general, English, Mathematics and General Science are taught by volunteers. More specific tasks can be discussed with those responsible. In Ghana, the school year is divided into trimesters. It begins in September and ends in June.
For teaching at a Senior Secondary School, either a partially or fully completed teacher’s certificate is required.
